The city pillar in Paknam is unusual because it is a combination of a Chinese Shrine and a Thai city pillar. This is basically regarded as the foundation stone for Samut Prakan City. It was built nearly 200 years ago in 1822 A.D. King Rama II presided over the ceremony to consecrate the city pillar on the 7th day of the waxing moon on the 4th lunar month of 1822. The city at that time had many Chinese immigrant labourers. So, that is the reason that there is also an important Chinese shrine here. The Chinese God that they worship here is believed to be able to protect the city from any harm or danger.
